• 장개원 작가는 일정 공간에 특정 기억들을 가두려 한다. 공간은 그릇이고, 기억은 그릇을 손에 놓지 않았던, 나를 키워댄 어머니에 대한 흔적이다. 의식이든 무의식이든 분간할 필요는 없다. 세상에 어떤 이가 어머니의 기억을 의식적으로 떠올릴 수 있겠는가!
• 작가는 어머니와 공간, 어머니와 집, 그와 관련한 주변 이야기들을 기억이라는 대본을 통해 평면회화로 옮겨낸다. 그리고 다양한 색을 통해 그 기억들을 세상과 소통하고자 한다. 평면 속에 소소한 일상들을 함께 쥐어 짜내 아름다운 나의 고향, 나의 집을 그려낸다. 이것이 작가가 회화적 기교를 통해 기억을 연장하는 방법이며, 예술적 가치에 의미를 부여하여 기억을 보존하는 방식이다. 작가의 작품 속에 사진과 같은 기억의 파노라마와 고즈넉한 색상, 아련한 빛깔들이 더해 우리의 정신과 기억을 더욱 어려지게 하는 이유가 바로 여기에 있다. 이것이 작가가 펼쳐내는 예술적 가치 중에서 가장 주목해야 할 장점이다.

• Artist Jang Gae-Won tries to store specific memories in a certain space. The space is a bowl, and the memory is a trace of my mother, who did not let the bowl out of her hands and raised me. There is no need to distinguish between consciousness and unconsciousness. What kind of person in the world can consciously recall memories of their mother?
• The artist translates mother and space, mother and house, and related stories around it into flat paintings through the script called memory. And he tries to communicate those memories with the world through various colors. By squeezing small things in daily lives in the flat-panel, he draw his beautiful hometown and his house. This is how the artist prolong his memory through pictorial techniques, and it is a method of preserving the memory by giving meaning to artistic values. This is why the artist's work adds a panorama of memories such as photographs, tranquil colors, and faint hues to make our minds and memories even younger. This is the most noteworthy part of the artist's artistic value.
