바다는 인간의 시선이 쉽게 닿지 않는 깊이와 시간을 품고 있다. 그곳에서 살아가는 존재들은 우리가 익숙하게 이해해 온 세계의 질서를 벗어나, 전혀 다른 감각과 호흡으로 삶을 이어간다. 장남원은 오랜 시간 바다 속으로 들어가 그 낯선 세계를 응시해온 작가이다.
그의 사진 속에서 고래는 단순한 피사체가 아니다. 거대한 몸짓과 느린 유영, 그리고 깊은 침묵 속에서 드러나는 존재의 리듬은 인간 중심의 시간과 감각을 해체하며, 우리가 잊고 있던 자연과의 관계를 다시 묻는다. 카메라는 기록의 도구를 넘어, 인간과 자연 사이에 놓인 거리를 사유하게 만드는 매개로 작동한다.
수십 년에 걸친 작가의 여정은 한순간의 장면을 포착하는 기술을 넘어, 기다림과 공존의 태도로 축적된 시간의 결과이다. 사진 속 고래들은 특정한 서사를 강요하지 않는다. 대신 관람자 각자가 바다의 깊이와 마주하며 스스로의 감각을 확장하도록 이끈다.
이번 전시 <움직이는 섬, 고래>는 인간이 자연을 바라보는 방식에 대한 질문이자, 우리가 속해 있는 세계를 다시 사유토록 한다. 장남원의 시선은 말없이 흐르는 바다처럼, 조용하지만 깊게 우리 안으로 스며든다.

The ocean holds depths and spans of time that rarely yield to the human gaze. The beings that inhabit this realm exist beyond the familiar order through which we understand the world, sustaining their lives through entirely different rhythms of perception and breath. For decades, Jang Namwon has entered these waters, observing this unfamiliar world from within. In his photographs, whales are not merely subjects. Their immense bodies, unhurried movements, and the profound silence they embody reveal a rhythm of existence that unsettles human-centered notions of time and perception, prompting us to reconsider our relationship with the natural world. Here, the camera moves beyond a tool of documentation, becoming a medium through which the distance between humanity and nature is contemplated. The artist’s journey, spanning several decades, transcends the act of capturing a fleeting moment; it is the result of time accumulated through patience and a practice grounded in coexistence. The whales in his images do not impose a fixed narrative. Instead, they invite each viewer to encounter the depths of the ocean and, in doing so, expand their own sensibilities.
Moving Islands, Whales is both a question posed to the ways in which humans perceive nature and an invitation to rethink the world we inhabit. Like the silent flow of the sea, Jang Namwon’s gaze quietly yet profoundly seeps.
